John was offered a place on The Rehab Physio’s sponsored 80-hour intensive rehab programme following his accident, funded by The Rooprai Spinal Trust and Fletchers Solicitors.
He attended The Rehab Physio’s clinic for a month, receiving four hours of intensive physio per day over a five-day period, using robotics and virtual reality to allow him to perform thousands of repetitions to allow physiological changes to start taking place.
During the initial weeks, the main focus was on building his core strength for stability and balance as this would act as a foundation to start improving his lower limb movement and strength to allow him to weight bear.
He is currently on his second course of rehab, attending The Rehab Physio’s gym three times a week for four hours where he has access to specialist equipment including body weight supported treadmills, standing frames and passive cycles, as well as regular equipment such as bikes and rowers.
John comments: “The first programme of rehab gave me the opportunity to build my confidence as well as my core strength. I can’t emphasise enough the benefits, both mental and physical, of being able to train in a clinic environment, with people with similar injuries and conditions.
Regaining your independence is a really important phase in the rehab journey, so for my second programme, the ability to train in a safe environment but have access to the team when I need them has been great for my motivation and confidence.
None of this would have been possible without the financial support of The Rooprai Spinal Trust and Fletchers Solicitors. Their funding, combined with the expertise of The Rehab Physio has enabled me to access the life-changing rehab that I needed to be able to improve my strength and mobility, regain my independence and ultimately change my life for the better.”
On Thursday 16th May we’re hosting a charity football match, in partnership with The Rooprai Spinal Trust and Fletchers Solicitors to raise money for people with life-changing spinal cord injuries so that they can access the vital rehabilitation treatment that they need to improve their quality of life.
