“I’m a bit of a doubting Thomas I suppose. The first thing that hit me at the start of my treatment was the atmosphere in the intensive rehab centre, which was unlike any clinical environment that I’d experienced before. Although it’s full of state-of-the-art technology and equipment, which could be quite daunting for the uninitiated, it was big and bright and the optimism of both the professionals and other patients was infectious. For the first time since my accident, the team at The Rehab Physio gave me hope and helped me to see other potential outcomes if I was prepared to put the work in.”
Steve’s Condition
During treatment for a spinal cord injury, an MRI scan revealed that Steve had prolapsed three disks, T6, L3 and L4, and he was in hospital for six months.
When he was leaving hospital the general opinion was that he had made a good recovery for a T6 patient, but his mobility was likely to be restricted. Steve was resigned to the fact that he would probably be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and things were never going to be the same again.
On a night out, a friend challenged Steve by asking if he was prepared to accept the prognosis that he had been given. Steve started to think about exploring other options after talking to his family.
Our Treatment
Steve visited The Rehab Physio with his wife to see what was on offer. By his own admission, he felt quite sceptical, having never looked beyond the NHS for treatment previously. From the initial discussions and assessment, it became very clear that the Intensive Rehabilitation program was worth pursuing.
Since his accident, Steve had never been given the opportunity to attempt to walk. On his 8th day on the program, Steve walked across the gym several times, aided by a hoist as a safety net rather than a support. That was a significant moment for Steve!
As for the future, Steve is realistic about what can be achieved, but at the same time, doesn’t want to underestimate his recovery potential. He thinks that although his wheelchair may feature in his life, his treatment at The Rehab Physio means he won’t be as reliant on it.
