All of our Physiotherapists are specially trained to assess for suitability, measure and fit DMO products.
Dynamic Movement Orthoses (DMO) are lycra-type aids that give support and stability to specific parts of the body, with the aim of enhancing normal movement.
There has been a lot of research in recent times into these complementary aids, and DMOs are proven to help improve stability, posture, dynamic balance and muscle tone, when part of an overall programme of specialist physiotherapy.
All of our Physiotherapists are specially trained to assess for DMO suitability in any given case, and also to measure and fit these products for maximum benefit.
What conditions can DMOs be suitable for?
DMOs may be useful in treating:
- Cerebral palsy
- Stroke- foot drop/ shoulder subluxation
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Spinal injury
- Traumatic brain injury
What kinds of DMOs can be used?
- Body suits
- Leggings and shorts
DMOs often produce good results by giving sensory feedback to the body, and by helping improve postural control for children with cerebral palsy. A DMO suit can help moderate neurological tone and allow a child to improve their head control. This makes it easier to use their eye-gaze computer, or even to tolerate an upright position for eating. It can also help reduce involuntary athetoid movements.
There are more types of garments which may also be beneficial, and our physiotherapists can advise on these.
